The new sound for snares and side drums PDF Print E-mail

Roland Winkler reports

On developing the "New sound" for the Drum-El-Stettner the special tonal sound, which we are currently using for our show, wasn't the only thing that was developed. The by-product of this development was a firm, wide ranged sound, which is suitable for every standard snare drum and every side snare. Utilizations with different overtone spectrums are also possible..

The drum heads are currently only produced by Roland Winkler and exclusively for personal need.

On the following pages I would like to present my new developments. For comparison I put videos on this site in which you can hear 3 differently built drums:

  • "normal" standard snare drum
  • 3-sound-head: rebuilt snare drums for the new snare and side drum sound
  • MELODYsnares: rebuilt snare drum for the Drum-El-Stettner (tonal) Sound talk
The new sounds are not merchandised yet!

The drummer on these videos is Thomas Froschauer. (I Thank you very much for being available for my video project at such short notice.)

Enjoy the presentation of this awesome young drummer:

  • Video 1: 4 snare drums for comparison among it selves
  • Video 2: the same snare drums without the snare wire
  • Video 3: again SONOR and my Buddy Rich Snare (rebuilt)
  • Audios: all the pieces of music as MP3

Thomas Froschauer's statement after the first tests: "With this modification of the drum heads it is finally possible to play small melodies on ONE drum without pressing it. Furthermore the snare gets more attack and sounds more controlled: I LOVE IT!"

The videos were taken with a SONY handycam DCR-SR35 and a SONY minidisc-recorder MZ-R35 with SONY stereo microphone ECM-MS957.

For the utiliization on the internet the videos were converted to flash format and the audios to mp3.

Moreover I want to thank Gerhard Kondelik from the Amstettner Musikhaus for lending me some drums for test and demo purposes. I also appreciate the friendly and morally support!
